Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate user behavior of the Real English CD-ROM. It is a case study which involves a piece of software and a single user. The study focused on the following aspects: navigation, locus of control and problems. The subject of this study was a lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. The research instrumeilts used for data collection were semi-structured interviews, learner's log, and transcripts from three sessions of observation. The frndings from the study were analyzed in order to investigate the subject's navigation patterns, how he exercised control and the problems he encountered. The results of this study revealed that the subject did not use the Real English CD-ROM in a very effective way. This is due to navigation dificulties and the high level of learner control given by the program. Therefore, possible ways of helping a learner use the program more effectively should be taken into account in order to exploit the piece of software as independent learning material.
