Abstract:
The aim of this research was to study the effect of sludge seed on anaerobic granulation in UASBreactor treating proteinaceous wastewater using sludges from activated sludge and anaerobic sludgedigester as seeds. The wastewater was first acidified in an acid tank (6-liter liquid volume and 6-hrHRT). Non-acidified solids and acidogenic bacteria were partly removed by sedimentation tank.After that, acidified wastewater was pumped into UASB reactors. The upflow velocity wascontrolled at 0.25 m/hr and the HRT was 24 hrs. A commercial soybean power was used as asubstrate at the concentration of 5000 mg/L COD into an acidogenic reactor. The soluble influentCOD of both UASB reactors was about 1280 mg/L. The reactors were investigated under roomtemperature for 255 days. The result showed that both reactors had the COD removal of over 89percent. The granules were initially observed on Day 31 and Day 66 of operation for activatedsludge-seeded reactor and anaerobic sludge digester-seeded reactor, respectively. For both reactors,over 40 percent of granular biomass were between 0.425 and 4.75 mm in diameter and 16-57 m/hrof settling velocity. The average SMA (Specific Methanogenic Activity) of both was 0.47 and 0.35gCOD/gVSS-d for activated sludge-seeded reactor and anaerobic sludge digester-seeded reactor,respectively. The SEM showed that granules from both reactors consisted of mainly Methanothrixlikespecies.
