Abstract: The first and second parts of this thesis deal with convenient and straightforward syntheses of dihydro-3(2H)-furanones A and 8-methoxy-1-tetralones B. Synthesis of 2-(2-arylethyl)imidazoles D employing C as the starting material is described in the third part of the thesis. The last part of the thesis describes the preparation of the electron-deficient diene F from the flash vacuum pyrolysis of the anthracene adduct E and their use in organic synthesis.
