Abstract: This thesis presents a method of nonlinear static analysis of an inextensible membrane sustained under its own weight. To solve the problem, an energy functional of the extensible membrane is formulated in rectangular coordinate. The energy functional consists of the potential energy due to stretching of the membrane and the potential energy of its own weight. For stable equilibrium of the membrane, the first variation of the enrgy functional is vanished. Since the problem is nonlinear, the finite element method and the Newton-Raphson iterative process are used to solve it. The results for the case of a circular membrane are, compared with the exact solution, they are found to be in a very good agreement.
