Effectiveness of Q-switched nanosecond versus picosecond of 1064 nm nd : YAG laser for dark lips treatment
Abstract:
Background: Q-switched nanosecond laser has been used as standard instrument to treat dark lips by destroying melanin pigment. Nowadays, the picoseconds laser has been developed for pigmented skin lesion removal, but there is no study using picoseconds laser for dark lip.
Objectives: To study the effectiveness of Q-switched nanosecond 1064 nm Nd:YAG compare with picoseconds 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser in treating dark lips
Materials and Methods: The total 46 subjects were allocated to nanosecond group (NS) or picoseconds group (PS). They were received laser treatment for 4 sessions every 2 weeks (week 0 week 6) with 2 follow up visit every 2 weeks (week 8 and week 10). Melanin index at lip was measured by Mexameter® at baseline and every session. Photographs were used for clinical assessment at 4th week and 8th week. Side effect and satisfaction were evaluated from subjects.
Results: By picoseconds laser treatment, the statistical significant reduction of melanin index has been found at 8th week and 10th week and effect was lasted until the end of study. While the nanosecond laser treatment, the significant reduction of melanin index has been found at 4th week, the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) has been occurred on week 6 onwards until the end of study. There was no serious side effect in both groups.
Conclusions: 1064 nm Nd:YAG picoseconds laser is better than Q-switched nanosecond 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser for treating dark lip.
