Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not students assignmeaning in a card game activity so that the researcher could find a technique to teachvocabulary more effectively.This study was carried out with 54 students from M. 216 at BmgpakokWittayakom School, from which 6 of the students were chosen as the subjects fromthe mixed ability group.During the six weeks of the experiment, all students participated in eachcard game activity before pre-teaching vocabulary. The card game activity consistsof 24 cards, twelve green cards, each with a target vwabulary item appearing in thesentence, and twelve pink cards on which the meaning of vocabtllary items appeared.Six different methods of providing meaning to the vocabulary items were used in thestudy. The game involved the students matching a vocabulary item on the green cardwith its meaning on the pink card. The students were asked to do the activity ingoups of six but the experimental group was divided into two groups of three so thatthe researcher could observe them more easily.The instruments were pre- and post-vocabulary tests, a score profile, andobservation notes.The findings of this research study revealed that, while the students canassign meaning to the vocabulary items using the six methods provided, there was noimprovement in their ability to do so across the three card games. Furthermore, therewas no evidence to suggest that the results of the study could be generalized to othercontexts. However, the results of the post-test show that students were able toremember the words they had encountered in the card game activity, indicating thatthe activity aided memory of new vocabulary items. The results also show thatstudents were able to remember picturable words better than unpicturable words.It was suggested that the teacher should include strategy training to helpstudents assign meaning to new vocabulary items more easily. Suggestions werealso made regarding how the teacher could provide appropriate definitions to helpstudents assign meaning to vocabulary items in the card game activity.
