Abstract:
The study was concerned about red color problem of wastewater in facultative pond of food processing industries. It might be caused by the growth of purple sulfur bacteria. The experiments were consisted of 3 parts as determination of wastewater quality, isolation and identification of bacteria that produced red color and treating of wastewater that contained red color substances by physical and chemical processes. The chemical properties of wastewater were investigated in 2 different factories as CS-10 and CN-03 during 4, 2 months, respectively. The wastewater from pond No. 3 of CS-10 factory had average pH, BOD,, COD, suspended solid, chloride, phosphorus, TKN, color intensity at 375 nm. and nitrate values as 7.0-7.8, 425.3 mg/L, 764.9 mg/L, 292.9 mg/L, 347.5 mgL, 21.6 mg/L, 156.7 mg/L, 1.334 unit, 4.53 mg/L, respectively. Thc wastewater from pond No. 2 of CN-03 facto~y had average pH, BOD,, COD, suspended solid, chloride, phosphorus, TKN, color intensity at 375 nm. and nitrate values as 6.9-7.7, 417.4 mgL, 814.6 mg/L, 287.1 mdL, 430.1 mg/L, 26.7 mg/L, 165.0 mgIL, 1.312 unit, and 3.75 mg/L, respectively. The total number of bacteria in pond No. 3 of CS-10 factory and pond No. 2 of CN-03 factory were 6.8~10" and 6.5~10" cfu/inL, respectively. But the number of bacteria that produced red color in pond No. 3 of CS-10 factory and pond No. 2 of CN-03 factory were 2.55x10' and 1.95x10'cfu/mL, respectively. The bacteria that produced rcd color was identical with genus Chromatim sp. due to its inorphological and biochemical properties. For the physical treatment of above red color wastewater, thc rcd color was disappeared within13 days by fully aeration. Some chemical agent that belong to oxidizing agent group could reduce the color intensity of the wastewater. For example. when the KNO, was added in the wastewater as the concentration of 30 mg1L and fully aeration. the color of wastewater was absolutely reduced within 4 days. Feel: as the concentration of 4 1ng1L also gave the best result for the removal of color in the wastewater within 4 days operation. When the treatment efficiency betwcen chemical added and fully aeration and chemical added process were considered. It was found that aeration could reduce the treatment time.
