Abstract: In this study we applied the Galerkin method and the Galerkin Gradient Least-Squares (GGLS) method to the one-dimensional problem of the singular diffusion equation ? in (0,1), 0 < ? << 1, with the given boundary conditions. In each case we approximate the solution u by polynomial of order one in each subinterval, which lead to the tridiagonal system of linear equations. The sweep method is then applied using Maple program. The example problems are demonstrated. The numerical results and point-wise error estimates are presented. In the boundary layer region, the GGLS method gives small errors comparison with those errors from the Galerkin method. We give an explicit formular for the parameter ? in the GGLS method.
