Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the cost per head in graduate education of Chulalongkorn University during the fiscal year 1978-1980. A comparison was made between the cost per head in graduate education in Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities in terms of government budget received and expenditures from university revenue. These cost data were collected as direct costs from faculties and the Graduate School Funds and as indirect costs from the operating funds of the Central administration and the various research institutes. The analysis was carried out in two ways: first, the cost per head was analyzed into operating cost, annualized capital cost and central cost, and second, the cost per head was analyzed into fixed cost and variable cost. The result of the analysis in the first category was as follows: In the fiscal year 1978, the cost per head in graduate education in Science was 30,205 Bahts, being operating cost 24,077 Bahts, annualized capital cost 4,805 Bahts and central cost 1,325 Bahts. In Social Sciences, it was 14,061 Bahts, being operating cost 11,329 Bahts, annualized capital cost 1,407 Bahts and central cost 1,325 Bahts. In Humanities, it was 17,459 Bahts, being operating cost 14,972 Bahts, annualized capital cost 1,162 Bahts and central cost 1,325 Bahts. In the fiscal year 1979, the cost per head in graduate education in Science was 36,728 Bahts, being operating cost 29,390 Bahts, annualized capital cost 5,974 Bahts and central cost 1,364 Bahts. In Social Sciences, it was 16,625 Bahts, being operating cost 13,712 Bahts, annualized capital cost 1,549 Bahts and central cost 1,364 Bahts. In Humanities, it was 22,939 Bahts, being operating cost 20,151 Bahts, annualized capital cost 1,424 Bahts and central cost 1,364 Bahts. In the fiscal year 1980, the cost per head in graduate education in Science was 41,155 Bahts, being operating cost 32,550 Bahts, annualized capital cost 7,085 Bahts and central cost 1,520 Bahts. In Social Sciences, it was 18,329 Bahts, being operating cost 14,983 Bahts, annualized capital cost 1,826 Bahts and central cost 1,520 Bahts. In Humanities, it was 21,586 Bahts, being operating cost 18,488 Bahts, annualized capital cost 1,578 Bahts and central cost 1,520 Bahts. The results of the analysis in the second category was as follows: In the fiscal year 1978, the cost per head in graduate education in Science was 30,205 Bahts, being fixed cost 20,850 Bahts and variable cost 9,355 Bahts. Is Social Sciences, it was 14,061 Bahts, being fixed cost 9,260 Bahts and variable cost 4,801 Bahts. In Humanities, it was 17,459 Bahts, being fixed cost 11,819 Bahts and variable cost 5,640 Bahts. In the fiscal year 1979, the cost per head in graduate education in Science was 36,728 Bahts, being fixed cost 24,755 Bahts and variable cost 11,973 Bahts. Is Social Sciences, it was 16,625 Bahts, being fixed cost 10,670 Bahts and variable cost 5,955 Bahts. In Humanities, it was 22,939 Bahts, being fixed cost 16,259 Bahts and variable cost 6,680 Bahts. In the fiscal year 1980, the cost per head in graduate education in Science was 41,155 Bahts, being fixed cost 27,795 Bahts and variable cost 13,360 Bahts. Is Social Sciences, it was 18,329 Bahts, being fixed cost 11,918 Bahts and variable cost 6,411 Bahts. In Humanities, it was 21,586 Bahts, being fixed cost 15,193 Bahts and variable cost 6,393 Bahts. Furthur analysis revealed that in projecting the cost per head in the future, researchers should focus their attention to variable costs since these costs will vary in direct proportion to the number of graduate students, while rate of inflation nust also be taken into consideration. It is also recommended that Universities should make a survey of the unemployment situation, evaluate the efficiency of the post graduates in their work from employees and the efficient use of institutional buildings and teaching facilities. Finally, every university should complete its cost per head in the graduate education which can then be used in arriving at standard cost per head in graduate education to be used in allocating government budget.
