Abstract:
This classroom-based research study was undertaken to findout what problems would arise in using a Self-Assessment Technique(SAT) in technical writing, and to investigate the subjectsattitudes towards this technique.The major findings of this study were as follows:1 . After using SAT in technical writing, the researcher hada problem in selecting elements of writing to be used as evaluativecriteria, selecting the types of additional practice exercises tofamiliarize the subjects with SAT, allocating marks for each criterionand choosing Sa form for scoring. Further, the subjects also had theproblem of not understanding evaluative criteria or objectivescoring. The subjects did not have enough experience in using SAT.Additionally, It was found that the background knowledge of grammatical features of the subjects affected the use of SAT.2. Also, it was found out that learner-centred learning andnot ivat ion enhanced self-esteem, self-monitoring and good learningatmosphere, the factors that enabled SAT to be used with writingsuccessfully.3 . The subjects expressed positive attitudes towards SAT.They regarded it as a very useful and helpful learning technique
