Abstract:
This classroom-based research study is an investigationinto the effect of using the concept mapping technique to increasethe students writing skills in ideas organization, and theirattitudes towards the use of this technique.This study was conducted with 1 0 less-able first yearstudents majoring in Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering,King Mongkuts Institute of Technology Thonburi . They were enrolledin the course LNG.lO1 General English for Science and Technology.They were purposively selected from the results of their diarywriting.The study lasted for one semester and data were collectedfrom the students score-profiles, the teachers diary, studentsdiaries, a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview.The results of the investigation show that the conceptmapping technique helped the less-able students improve their writingorganization skill while problems on grammar and other mechanicsstill exist. The score-profile showed the evidence of improvement andthe students attitudes towards the technique were very positive.They considered the technique as another new approach to learnmore effectively in their normal English class, with more class-collaborationand self-responsibility in learning.
