Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to study the development of Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University and Walailak University from the past to the present and the impacts,of the establishment of these two universities on their nearby community development.The findings revealed that the establishment of the two universities affected the nearby communities physically, socially and economically, especially those in front of the universities and in front of the entrance exit gates of the universities. During the past 4 5 years, the increasing number of students and university personnel of both universities has led to a more demand of facilities such as dormitories, houses, shops, cafeterias, school supply shops and entertainment venues, etc. Merchants selling similar goods have organized a weekly market on Highway 4016 running in front of Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University. As for economic and social impacts, daily expenses on food, school supplies and other services available both inside and outside the universities.Presently, in Tambon Tha Ngio, where the former university is located, and in Tambon Thai Buri, where the latter is located, the number of population has risen by 49.40% and 43.13%, respectively.The areas around the universities, however, have been developed in a systematic manner, resulting in conflicts of land use, insufficient utilities and types of trading and services that adversely affect the quality of life of the university personnel. As a result, this study would like to highlight the importance of planning or guidelines materialized by both the universities and the communities.
