Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to apply the nonlinear dynamics to discuss thepredictability of climate through a modified Lorenz system constructed for horizontalatmospheric motion derived from the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressibleviscous fluid, the pressure gradient forces are assumed to be constant forsimplification purpose. Various numerical experiments have been done on differentsets of constants chosen in order to observe the trajectories of points near the steadystate solution. From the analysis and numerical experiments, it can be concludedthat if the effect of the unstabilizing factors overcomes that of the stabilizing factors,the system becomes unstable and chaos takes place.
