Abstract:
To synthesize quantitatively the relationship between learning achievement in mathematics, science and Thai at primary and secondary educational levels and its seven related factors The seven related factors were mental abilities, scholastic aptitude, creative thinking, problem solving ability, attitude toward subject, school size and parental education The synthesis was conducted by gathering papers from both government offices and university libraries in Thailand from 1964 to 1983. The available research works were examined with respect to their validity and reliability. The 118 researches and theses were finally used for synthesis. Among them were 559 correlation coefficients being presented. The reliability and validity of these correlation coefficients were again examined and synthesized by computing the mean and variance of correlation coefficients. The results were as follows: 1.The average relationship among all correlation coefficient was .5043 and its variance was .0137. This figure was significant at the .01 level. 2. The average relationship between learning achievement and each of seven factors was 2.1 mental abilities (r = .5764) 2.2 scholastic aptitude (r = .5297 ) 2.3 creative thinking (r = .2706) 2.4 problem solving ability (r = .6771) 2.5 attitude toward subject (r = .3213) 2.6 school size (r = .2907) 2.7 parental education (r = .2811). The relationship between learning achievement and each of seven factors was significant at .01 level and that learning achievement related most to problem solving ability (r = .6771) and least to creative thinking (r = .2 706) 3. The average relationship between learning achievement and all seven factors was 3.1 at primary (r = .579 7) 3.2 at secondary (r = .412 7). At each level the mean of correlation coefficient between learning achievement and its related factors both at primary and secondary levels related in the positively statistical significance at .01 levels. At the primary level learning achievement related most to scholastic aptitude, but at the secondary level it related most to problem solving; learning achievement related least to creative thinking at both the primary and secondary levels. 4. The average relationship between all seven factors and learning achievement was 4.1 mathematics (r = .4846) 4.2 science (r = .4361) 4.3 Thai (r = .5102). The seven related factors related most to learning achievement in Thai (r = .5102), second to most to mathematics (r = .4846), and least to science (r = .4361). 5. The comparison of correlation coefficient between learning achievement and that of the seven factors, at the primary and secondary levels there was a statistically significant difference at .05 levels, but within the three subjects and the related factors it was not a statistically significant difference at .05 level.
