Abstract:
The study first aims at the survey of problems and wants in learning and teaching of English for Communication Arts at Bangkok University with reference to curriculum, materials, teachers, students, and measurement. The respondents of the survey were ten English for Communication Arts teachers of Bangkok University and two hundred and ninety-three third year Communication Arts students of Bangkok University, The research tools were two questionnaire forms whose content was closely related. The data obtained were calculatecd through the means of percentage, frequency distrinbution, and x(2) test for two independent samples. The results were as follows. Concerning problems in English for Communication Arts learning and teaching, the results indicated that a large number of students could neither apply English for Communiucation Arts to the study of their major subject nor improve remarkably their abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking concerning their major subjects in English. Besides, the content of learning sheets was not relevant to studentsmajor subjects, and was not research based. Also, learning and teaching aids were not sufficient for use. In addition, teachers neither informed students of their teaching objectives nor did they employ various teaching techniques. Students shyness to express themselves in public, lack of revision of lessons, low basic knowledge of English, and heterogenous levels of English competence also posed problems. Furthermore, the standards in marking were not clearly explained to all students and common standards in marking were not agreed upon. Concerning wants, the respondents suggested that the content of English for Communication Arts should be a mixture of students major subjects and students daily life, and that English for Communication Arts should be divided into English for Journalism, English for Advertising, and English for Public Relations. Moreover, various types of measurement should be used and marks should come from two sources, classwork and formal evaluations. As to the significant difference between teachersand studentsanswers, the results indicated that the answers about wants are not significatly different whereas the ones about problems are. These answers concern the applicability of English for Communication Arts to the study of students major subjects, the studentsability to improve remarkably their competence in English for Communication Arts, the relevance of the content of learning sheets to students major subjects, the information of teaching objectives, the students level of basic knoledge of English, the amount of the content of evaluation papers, and the information on the standards in marking. Teachers and students differ significantly in their attitudes towarde these items.
