Abstract: Due to a large amount of information available on the Internet, the users are now confronting an information overload problem. They have to spend too much time in searching for the information that is relevant to their needs. Usenet News, the world-wide news distribution system, is one of the most popular Internet information services. The Usenet News readers are overwhelmed by a diversity of newsgroups which contain a gigantic volume of articles. To alleviate this problem, Usenet News Intelligent Agent (UNIA) is proposed as a new efficient tool to help the Usenet News readers in selecting interesting articles to read. The idea behind this thesis was influenced by two main approaches: Intelligent Agent with Machine Learning technique and Information Filtering. The UNIA learns the users interests by observing the user behavior in rating and taking actions from the training set of articles read by the user. This acquired knowledge of the users interests is represented as a user model. Based on this model, the UNIA ranks articles and suggests the actions to the user.

Abstract: ปัจจุบันผู้ใช้บริการเครือข่าย Internet กำลังเผชิญ กับปัญหาข้อมูลท่วมท้น (Information Overload) ซึ่งส่งผล กระทบให้ผู้ใช้บริการต้องเสียเวลามากขึ้นในการค้นหาข้อมูล ที่ตรงกับความต้องการ Usenet News เป็นบริการที่เผยแพร่ข่าวสารและบทความ ต่างๆ บนเครือข่าย Internet และเป็นบริการซึ่งมีขนาดของ Information มากมายมหาศาลที่เกิดขึ้นในแต่ละวัน เนื่องจาก มีกลุ่มของข่าวสาร (Newsgroup) และบทความ (Article) เป็นจำนวนมากให้ผู้ใช้บริการได้เลือกอ่าน ผู้ใช้บริการนี้จึง ประสบกับปัญหาของ Information Overload โดยตรง เพื่อแก้ปัญหาข้างต้น งานวิจัยนี้จึงได้นำเสนอและพัฒนา เครื่องมือที่มีชื่อว่า Usenet News Intelligent Agent (UNIA) เพื่อช่วยผู้ใช้บริการ Usenet News ในการเลือก อ่านบทความที่ตรงกับความสนใจ โดยใช้เทคนิคสำคัญ 2 เทคนิค คือ โปรแกรมที่เรียนรู้ความสนใจของผู้ใช้เพื่อสามารถทำงาน แทนผู้ใช้ได้ (Intelligent Agent with Machine Learning technique) และการกรองข้อมูลที่ไม่ตรงกับความสนใจออกเพื่อ นำเสนอเฉพาะข้อมูลที่ตรงกับความสนใจแก่ผู้ใช้ (Information Filtering) UNIA สามารถเรียนรู้ความสนใจของผู้ใช้จากการศึกษา พฤติกรรมการอ่านบทความ การให้คะแนนความสนใจ และปฏิกิริยา หรือการกระทำของผู้ใช้ต่อบทความที่ผู้ใช้สนใจ โดย UNIA จะนำ ความรู้ที่ได้ไปทำการจัดลำดับการนำเสนอบทความตามความสนใจ ของผู้ใช้ และจัดการกับบทความนั้นๆ แทนผู้ใช้โดยอัตโนมัติ
