Development of uv and blue light protection cosmetic product with encapsulated curcumin
Abstract:
UVA and UVB radiation have been proven to show negative effects toward the human skin including skin aging and burning. Many new researches have shown that blue light or high-energy visible light has negative effects such as the aging and wrinkling toward human skin as well after prolong contact. Aside from solar UV and blue light radiation exposure in outdoor environments, the changing lifestyles of consumers today increase their exposure to indoor blue light from computers, smart phones and other communication devices. In this study, encapsulated curcumin was selected to test its ability to fight reactive oxygen species from lipid peroxidation stimulated by UVA, UVB and blue light using thiobarbituric acid method. The half-inhibition value (IC50) of lipid peroxidation induced by UVA, UVB and blue light of encapsulated curcumin were 6.70, 27.25 and 7.41 μg/ml, respectively compared to BHT values of 6.45, 17.79 and 6.79 μg/ml, respectively. The results suggested that encapsulated curcumin was slightly less effective than BHT at inhibiting UVB. However, for UVA and blue light inhibition, encapsulated curcumin and BHT was as equally effective. Therefore, encapsulated curcumin has shown positive effect for protecting the skin from UV and blue light damage. Formulations for UVA, UVB and blue light protection gel cream were developed with 1, 3 and 5 % of encapsulated curcumin. The formulation with 3% encapsulated curcumin was selected and considered from its cosmetically acceptable properties. The selected formulation was tested for stability under heating-cooling alternating cycles for 1 month and accelerated test at 4, 25 and 45°C for 1 month. The stability result showed acceptable changes in pH, color and viscosity. The Sun Protection Factor was measured by Japan Daiso lab, Labsphere UV-1000s Ultraviolet Transmittance Analyzer and it showed SPF of 39 with PA++++. It could be concluded that this innovative sunscreen gel cream has shown positive results to become a commercialization product with opportunity in the specialized cosmetic market segment for complete UV, blue light and digital aging protection skin care.
