Abstract:
Explores an appropriate signal control for a varying traffic volume condition using traffic simulation programs: TRANSYT-7F and CORSIM. The four signal controls are determined for constant trafffic conditions based on the traffic volume in the past, the traffic volume in the past with progression on arterial. The traffic volume from detectors and the downstream reserved capacity. Meanwhile in the time-dependent traffic conditions, the four signal controls and the additional average traffic volume in the past control technique are applied. The results shown that the TRANSYT-7F can not be applied in saturated traffic conditions and time-dependent traffic conditions, whereas the CORSIM can be employed in these problems appropriately. In constant traffic conditions, the signal control considering the past traffic volume and progression on the main street yields the best result in delay minimization, when the traffic level is low. In heavier traffic up to the saturation, the signal control considering the queuestorage capacity gives the highest performance. When the level of traffic varies, the signal setting with past average traffic information is best in handling the congestion, both with and without the spillback.
