A comparative study on prathom suksa five students' learning styles in english language between schools under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok metropolitan administration and schools under the Fukuoka prefecture, Japan
Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to study and compare English learning styles between grade five students from schools under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and students from schools under the Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan and to present English teaching methods compatible with the teaching of grade five students both schools under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and schools under the Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The research instruments included English Learning Styles Inventory in Thai and Japanese versions, an English Teaching Method Observation Form and an Analysis form for checking the relevancy between English learning styles and English teaching methods. The samples were (1) 383 Thai students and 179 Japanese students. (2) 12 Thai teachers and 7 Japanese teachers. The findings were as follows: 1. Among the five catagories of English learning styles: Environmental aspect, Emotional aspect, Sociological aspect, Language perception and Cultural aspect at the total of fifty items, it was found that there were 23 same English Learning styles of grade five students from schools under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and grade five students From schools under the Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. There were 12 typical English learning styles of Thai students. The students indicated they like learning English in the room where the desks, chairs and other equipments are intidy order; believe and pay attention to what the teacher teaches; prefer learning in the class where every one sits in order; like to learn with teacher who is punctual; like to learn and practice all the English skills one skill at a time; work on all the assignment step by step; always set up a plan when being assigned; can learn English well in a cool classroom; like practicing English through written exercises; like to learn and practicing listening speaking writing and reading skills, one skill at a time; finish all the assignments though they are not interested in; always finish my work and other assignments on time without being reminded. They were 3 typical English learning styles of Japanese students indicated they like paticipating in learning when a teacher gives reward; can learn English well in a warm classroom; like learning English in the room where the desks, chairs, and other equipments are flexible and avilable at hand. 2. English teaching methods appropriate to teach grade five students in schools under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration were the Grammar Translation Method, the Silent Way Method, the Individualized Instruction Method, the Cognitive Code Learning Theory Method and the Direct Method. The English teaching methods appropriate to teach grade five students in schools under the Fukukoka Prefecture, Japan were the Community Language Learning Method, the Silent Way Method and the Direct Method.
