Abstract:
Medicinal plants are very important in pharmacology. Since, the ancient wisdom of Thailand has been used the fresh herbs in the treatment of wounds and skin diseases. Dermatitis caused by many bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The purpose of this research was to study the antibacterial and antifungal activity from medicinal plants located in Roi Et and Buriram. The medicinal plants that used to treat the dermatitis were obtained from the traditional doctor. Medicinal plants were selected using by the information from investigation and the interested plants also were selected. The antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and C. albicans was done using modified disc diffusion method. The grinded plant samples were used to put on agar medium containing P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and C. albicans instead of the use plant extract. The plates were incubated at 37 oC for 24 hrs. The diameter of the inhibition zones around each of the grinded plant was taken as measure of the antibacterial activity. From 123 fresh medicinal plants, many medicinal plants showed the antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and C. albicans. The result indicated that 7 selected medicinal plants, Allium sativum L., Allium cepa Linn, Allium ascalonicum, Eleutherine palmifolia, Allium tuberosum Rottl. ex Spreng, Aganosma marginata (Roxb.) G.Don and Capparis sp. showed both antibacterial and antifungal activities. Interestingly, we found that the grinded fresh bulb of Eleutherine palmifolia can inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa with clear zone. It has no report on the use of grinded fresh bulb of Eleutherine palmifolia can inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa before. Other researches were determined the antibacterial activity of Eleutherine palmifolia with solvent extraction, but results did not presented any growth inhibition activity against P. aeruginosa. The Capparis sp. fruit also surprisingly because of the application of use grinded fresh Capparis sp. fruit to treat the dermatitis was not demonstrated. This investigation is important to support Thailand traditional medicine of using fresh herbs to heal disease. An addition of any solvents during leave, bulb or fruit grinding was not required.
