Abstract:
This thesis aims at study the process of conservation and development with the participation of local people. The Pak Klong Wat Pradu community was chosen as case study initially interviews were conducted with site survey to outline the utilized area to compose past and present. Problem conductions were also studied within the chosen community. Results later led to setting guidelines for a conservation plan involving local people from the start. The acquisition of crucial information, i.e. Cutural heritage, Social values, and existing community problem were the result of interviews with local students and save insight into needs. The analysis of this needs directly affect the conservation plan which includes architectural history and promotion. The results show that the location of this community is a link of waterway transportation routes to other floating market communities, e.g. Ampawa Market, Bang Nok Kwag Market and Dum Nern Sa Duak Market. The old wooden shop house along the canal, a forms importance trading area are inhabited by Teochew merchants. These buildings share similar architectural features these include the location for ancestral shines (called Gaysin) which face the front of the building, the existence of common walkways that serve as the public zone for the community. The latter feature is unique to this community. This study suggest that there are several points to consider regarding the conservation plan of this area. Canal tour that includes this community with other floating market communities can be initiated to promote conservation of these old wooden house. Monitoring of changes in the composition of the community must also be carried out. The back of local participation to conserve and develop their community is from a lack of local cultural governance. This should encompass expertise from various sections, most importantly those with the insight into local lifestyle and wisdom. Community representatives municipal desman institutions in the area can all join architects and scholars to develop and initials a community conservation plan.
