Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis were to study : 1) the uses and users satisfaction of database structure, display format, index term, and time in retrieving ; 2) the efficiency of information storage and retrieval system ; and 3) problems in retrieving information from the research database. The hypotheses were : 1) the users are satisfied with the database structure and display format ; 2) the retrieving with free terms needs long period of time ; 3) if the recall value is high the precision value is low or vise versa ; and 4) the research subjects in database support the users needs at moderate level. The survey research method was employed in this thesis. The instruments used were : research database containing 6,887 records in ten subjects, and the questionnaire. The sampling population totaled 105, consisting of 17 lecturers, 20 researchers, 38 officials and 30 graduate students. The research results showed that most users were satisfied with the database structure at high level, while they were satisfied with the display format and printing format at moderate level. The time used in retrieving with free terms was 14 minutes in average which is rather short. The relation between the recall value and precision value was found in the same direction, that is if the recall value is high the precision value would also be high too. The users were satisfied with the division of 10 subjects at moderate level.
