Abstract:
To analysis and find a proper approach to preserve the western influenced houses built between the reign of King Rama V and King Rama VII In this study, more than 30 houses were selected to be used as case studies. The information was collected by surveying the architecture, interviewing the house owners and reviewing of related literature. Then the data was analyzed in order to fine the practical ways to preserve these architecture from further deterioration and demolition. From the study, it is found that these houses face a lot of problems. These problems are included in the study. One of these problems is caused by unproperly reabilitation due to the lack of understanding in conservation process. In the research, the values of historic houses are evaluated. These are historical value aesthetic value architecture value social value used value. Some of the case studies are considered of high value in several aspects and should be listed in the National Register of Historic Place However there are only a few comparing to the whole. In conclusion, Historic timber houses house should be preserved properly by considering the conservation concept which consists of 3 criteria : their values in various aspects, their potentials in rehabilitation and the objective in conservation. These criteria should be used as a frame work when a conservation plan is created. The government and private sectors should cooperated, both in legal and investment term, in creating the conservation incentive building program. Since this can provide the owners with more choices to preserve, revive or adapt them. The conservation of historic timber house needs to be carried out urgently before these houses disappear altogether.
