Opinions of instructors' and last year students' visual arts critique in art curriculum of public higher education institutions under the Ministry of University Affairs
Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to study the opinions of instructors and last year students in art curriculum of public higher education institutions under the Ministry of University Affairs concerning art criticism which included of two aspects : Content of art criticism and Concept of evaluation visual arts value. The population of this research were 9 instructors and 197 last year students in art curriculum second semester class of 2000 from Chulalongkorn University, Srinakharinwirot University at Prasarnmit, Silpakorn University, Cheangmai University, Khon Kaen University, Prince of Songkla University (Pattani Campus) and Burapha University. The research instrument was a set of survey questionnaire which consisted of check list, rating scale, and open-ended items. The data obtained was analized by means of percentage, arithematic means and standard deviation by statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS). The research results revealed that the instructors and students had the opinion concerning art criticism as follow ; a) on the aspect of content of art criticism on art criticism theory, critical process, teaching methods and materials, and measurement and evaluation were rated at the level of agreement; b) on the aspect of concept of evaluation visual arts value by means of Arthur Efland's aesthetic theory on objective theory, expressive theory and pragmatic theory, the instructors and students were rated at the level of uncertain. However, the instructors and students were rated mimetic theory at the level of no agreement and uncertain respectively. According to the research findings, it was suggested that the instructors should applied mixed criticism theories rather than only one theory in art criticism courses. Besides, critical and evaluation of visual arts value, art critics need to study theories completely and gain knowledge and other experiences which related this field. The art critics also has no prejudice to artist or artistry.
