Abstract:
This thesis aims to find methods for creating continuity in architectural form, base on computer morphing and warping technique. In literature review, the study of significance and historical aspects of continuity in architecture has found 15 variables which produce the perception of continuity in architectural form. To find which variables are more essential, the variables were compared to the analysis of old buildings in the book "Architecture in context" (Brolin, 1980). The outcomes are weigthing of importance among the concerned variables, ranging from the most effective ones. The order is 1.) Orientation 2.) Element shape 3.) Building shape, axis, rhythm 4.) Building size colors and textures 5.) Element size, element height 6.) Hierarchy of position, proportion 7.) Building height, hierarchy of size 8.) Hierarchy of shape 9.) Proximity. The sample buildings were chosen from the group of buildings on Prang Nara, Prang Phutorn and Chackawad road, which located inside the older section of Bangkok. These buildings have been built in various styles making them good examples of discontinuity in building form. Using morphing and warping technics of Elastic Reality software, the experiment shows the sequential transformation of the building facade from their originals to conform to that of the adjacent ones. By these technics, designers could analyze the degree of change and conformity appeared at a certain transformation step to help them design an infill building in such a circumstance. Conclusions are separated in two parts. The first is the comparison of results of the transformation made by morphing and warping. Most of the results between two methods are similar, but the transformation of variables in element relation, warping has shown more noticeable result. The second is the suggestion for the further use of the thesis, which how to choose the building, variables, technique, result, and caution.
