Abstract:
Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a beneficial effect on the health of the host. Dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota has been associated with a growing number of diseases. Some data on the metabolic syndrome suggest that changes in gut microbiome composition may play a role in the disorder.
Objective: to determine the efficacy of probiotic in two forms, tablet and yogurt on lowering blood sugar and blood lipid levels in patients with pre-diabetes and dyslipidemia.
Research Design: Forty patients with pre-diabetes and dyslipidemia were participated in this randomize controlled clinical trial and assigned to four groups; A,B,C,D. Group A consumed probiotic tablet 1 tablet daily ,group B consumed probiotic yogurt 135 grams once daily. Both probiotic tablet and probiotic yogurt contained about 109 CFU of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium spp. Group C consumed conventional yogurt 135 grams once daily, which contained Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. And group
consumed placebo. The fasting blood sugar (FBS) level, blood lipid level and body weight were recorded at week 0th, 3th, 6th .
Results: At the end of the study ; the week 6th, 28 patients were remained, and divided in 4 groups, which each group had 7 patients. None of these 4 groups caused significant change in fasting blood sugar level. The probiotic tablet and probiotic yogurt groups caused significant decrease in cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL levels (p<0.05). Probiotic yogurt group also significant increased HDL level (p 0.032). The conventional yogurt group also caused significant decrease cholesterol level (p<0.05), while the placebo group had no any change in blood lipid level. Comparison between week 0th, 3th and 6th found that probiotic yogurt group significant decreased lipid level at week 3th, while probiotic tablet group significant decreased lipid level at week 6 th.
Every group had change in body weight at the end of the week 6th. But only the probiotic yogurt group that caused significant decrease body weight (p<0.05). It had no any complaint about side- effect of probiotic consuming from the participants.
Conclusion: Probiotic consumption in forms tablet and yogurt could significant decrease lipid level. But probiotic yogurt group used lesser time than tablet form and also significant increased HDL level. Furthermore, probiotic yogurt consumption could significant lose weight. However, none of any probiotic forms decreased fasting blood sugar in pre-diabetes. So probiotic yogurt maybe a choice of supplement or food which helps in blood lipid lowering and weight losing.
