Abstract:
This integrated qualitative and quantitative research aims to evaluate the efficiency of the current version of the Thai national anthem in developing of national consciousness and nationalism in Thai people through the application of semiotic theory, hermeneutics theory, narrative theory and musical element analysis. It also emphasizes on the impact of the anthem upon different social classes in Bangkok. The study focal points comprise the impact upon their perception, feelings, physical reactions, consciousness and nationalism from audiences experience. The data is compiled through a survey research with 399 questionnaires. The survey respondents consist of people from the lower class, the middle class, and the upper class with 133 respondents for each group. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences Program (SPSS) is employed to analyze the data and calculate descriptive statistics, including percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics for hypothesis testing, i.e. One-Way ANOVA and Fishers least significant difference (LSD), with the level of significance at 0.05. The research findings are as follows: 1. The current version of the Thai national anthem is moderately effective in developing national consciousness and nationalism. Although the lyrics of the anthem, including its meaning and narrative elements, facilitate in developing consciousness and nationalism, the main content is still orientated towards force gathering in times of war rather than presenting other forms of solidarity. Moreover, most of the message comes from the ruling class, which in this case are the government and the military institutions. The meaning of the song is associated with the history of the nation, which reduces the quality of immortality. Meanwhile, the musical elements of the anthem can provoke activeness, alertness, vigor, dignity, boldness and courage. Furthermore, with its flowing harmony, it facilitates the concept of the nation. Additionally, the music simplicity makes it easier for everyone to perceive, listen, remember, sing and appreciate the significance of the true meaning. However, the overall musical elements, particularly the melody, still lack the signification of the Thai spirit, unique characteristics and identity. 2. People in each social class perceive the song at the same level when they hear the anthem. 3. People in each social class have feelings at different levels when they hear the anthem. The lower class has a higher level than the middle class and the upper class respectively. 4. People in each social class have physical reactions, consciousness, and nationalism at different levels when they hear the anthem. The lower class has a higher level than the middle and the upper class.
