Abstract:
To study the design guidelines for public areas around 4 BTS stations (National Stadium, Siam, Chit Lom and Phloen Chit) and the characteristic changes of these public areas. The research also focused on 3 particular objectives: 1) Study physical changes of the public areas around BTS 4 stations 2) Analysis physical effects on the public areas 3) Present design guidelines and propose physical improvement guidelines. According to observation and field survey, the public areas around the BTS stations have been dramatically changing after the establishment of the BTS system. The major changes are the beginning of the elevated public areas, which were built together with the elevated railway system, and the activities taking place on the elevated public areas. For example, the transit from BTS system to on-ground roads, the commercial connections among trade zones of each 4 station (each trade zone was connected by the elevated public areas.), and the connections between mass transit, commercial activities and other activities coexisting on the public areas of the 4 BTS stations. The design concept of the public areas around BTS has introduced 3 design and improvement guidelines which are equivalent to the characteristic of the areas, to the activities and to the elevated transportation system. 1) Plan out the improvement pattern of the public areas accorded with Mass transportation system and surrounding areas. 2) Set a design guidelines connection network between on-ground public areas (and their activities) and elevated public areas (and their activities). 3) Create a unique design for public areas to support activities in modern trade zones and modern mass transit. Finally, the research also provided useful improvement guidelines and suggestions for other similar public areas.
