Comparison of the satisfactory and efficacy of kakadu plum extract / terminalia ferdinandiana and placebo in the treatment of uneven hyperpigmentation and dark spot : Randomized controlled trial
Abstract:
Background: Kakadu plum extract, also called as Terminalia Ferdinandiana which has an antioxidant effect, anti wrinkles and skin lightening effect. However, the hypopigmenting effect of Kakadu plum extract in human subjects has only been shown in a few studies.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of Kakadu plum extract cream in comparison with placebo cream in the treatment of dark spots or uneven hyperpigmentation.
Materials and methods: Thirty patients (men and women, aged 20-55 years old) with dark spots or uneven hyperpigmentation were enrolled to this randomized, split face comparative study. The patients were enrolled and randomly assigned Kakadu plum extract on one side and placebo on the other side twice daily for 8 weeks with follow up every 4 weeks. Mexameter measurement were perfomed along with photography by VISIA Analysis at baseline, 4th week, 8th week and 12th week. Adverse events and satisfaction score were observed and recorded throughout the study.
Results: All the patients completed the study. The subjects were male (5/30, 16.67%) and female (25/30, 83.34%). The average patients age was 35.47±9.52. The average male age was 34.2±13.99. The average female age was 35.72±8.74. All patients showed pigment improvement with both treatments. The result revealed the mean melanin index of Kakadu plum extract before treatment was 269.56±70.29, while after treatment the mean melanin index became 240.19±61.57. The result of the placebo cream before treatment was 245.49±73.12, while after treatment changed 220.41±66.07. No statistical significant difference (p-value=0.24). There is no serious side effects of these both creams. The participant satisfaction rated mostly at mildly satisfied for both Kakadu plum extract cream and placebo with no shown of significant difference between both sides.
Conclusions: No significant improved of dark spots and uneven hyperpigmentation between Kakadu plum compared with placebo
