Comparative study among thunbergia laurifolia lindl. extract cream, 0.02% triamcinolone cream and cream base for the treatment of plaque-type psoriasis
Abstract:
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that commonly treated with topical corticosteroids. Recent studies indicated that Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract, called Rang Chuet in Thai, could reduce inflammation and anti-oxidative effects. An clinical study of Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract for psoriasis is limited.
Objective: To study the efficacy of the treatment of plaque-type psoriasis using 10%Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract, 0.02% Triamcinolone cream and a cream base.
Study Design: Randomized, double-blind Clinical Trial
Materials and Methods: Thirty-six patients with mild severity (less than 10% body surface area involvement) plaque-type psoriasis were enrolled. On each patient three separate lesions of psoriasis were treated with steroid cream (0.02%Triamcinolone), 10% Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract cream, and cream base. Each lesion area was randomly assigned for treatment by a different type of cream using a generated randomization computer scheme. Patients were instructed to apply the creams twice a day for eight weeks, with a follow up every two weeks. Skin improvement evaluations were based on the mean change of mPASI score, mean change of DLQI score, and any adverse reactions that occurred.
Results: Thirty subjects completed the study protocol. Treatments with 0.02% Triamcinolone cream and 10% Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract cream demonstrated significantly better improvement for mPASI score and DLQI score than the cream base group (p < 0.001). 0.02% Triamcinolone cream was slightly better reduction of mPASI score than 10% Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract cream but did not significant difference (p =0.63). .
The adverse effect of 10% Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract cream is mild with skin redness and itchy symptoms.
Conclusions: 10% Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract cream is effective and safe for the treatment of plaque type psoriasis .Therefore, use of 10% Thunbergia laurifolia Lindl. leaf extract cream can be an alternative treatment for plaque type, psoriasis.
