Abstract:
Thailand and a broad researches studied the effects of herbs in with respect to degenerative brain loss improvements such as better memory, and learning. Herbs Ginkgo Biloba, Passion Fruit, Ginseng, Brahmi, Spinach and Centella asiatica (Gotu kola). Some of these herbs such as Gotu kola are traditional herbs which are easily accessible, find, inexpensive and are rich in many benefits which help optimize brain function and create a relaxing mood by increasing the secretion of GABA. GABA is substance that results in relaxation and stress reduction effects by increasing the alpha brain waves and decreasing the beta brain waves.
However, now that social changes in population and a modern lifestyle have increased stress, there has not been a research study which has yet found Gotu kola can reduce stress and change brain waves in the short term and long-term as well affecting on the liver function. That reason is origin of experimental research in this time.
The effects of Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) on dynamics of brain waves (EEG) and reducing of stress. The samples are employed in mali interdisciplinary hospital, male and female, healthy, strong, aged between 20-50 years. 38 persons are divided into two groups. An experimental group of 19 persons take the extract of Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) of 4 Capsules (800 mg.) and the placebo control group of 19 persons take a placebo of 4 Capsules (800 mg.)
The study found that the brain waves (EEG) of delta wave, alpha wave, beta wave and gamma wave were not of different significance statistically between the test and control groups. However, there was a marked physiological response. Delta waves, the strongest waves, and theta waves, the second strongest waves as measured by a stress test both within the group and between groups were not different in significance statistically.
Even though theta waves are a good indicator of calming and relaxing meditation, which did not markedly change, there were statistical significance found in blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory function which decreased significance statistically.
Conclusion: Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) extract do not apply to changes in brain waves (EEG) as associated with relaxation and stress in the short term. But the effect of lowering blood pressure. Heart rate and respiratory rate may are significant.
