Comparisons of belief in internal-external locus of control of pupils with difference in sexes, parents' education levels, and self-reported on child rearing practices
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to compare the belief in internal-external locus of control of pupils who reported to be reared by different child rearing practices, pupils whose parents had different education levels and pupils who were different in sexes. The subjects were 508 pupils, 244 males and 264 females, enrolled the first semester of Matayom 3 (M.3) of the 1982 academic year in 9 coeducational secondary schools in Bangkok. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant difference in the belief in internal-external locus of control (1) among pupils who reported to be reared in the atmospheres of democracy, overprotection and rejection (2) among pupils whose parents had different education levels and (3) between male and femal pupils. The instruments used in this study were (1) the pupilss personal data questionnaire (2) a Thai version of the Liverant, Rotter and Crownes Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (I-E Scale) (3) the Self-Reported Child Rearing Practices Questionnaire Constructed by Than Paepech and modified by Sukanya Kuneung. The data were analyzed by using One-Way Analysis of Variance and Multiple Comparisons. The results indicated that at the .05 level of significance (1) there was a significant difference in the belief in internal-external locus of control among pupils who reported to be reared in the atmospheres of democracy, overprotection and rejection; Multiple Comparisons revealed that the pupils who reported to be reared in the atmosphere of democracy believed in internal locus of control more than the pupils who reported to be reared in the atmosphere of rejection (2) there was no significant difference in the belief in internal-external locus of control among pupils whose parents education levels were high, middle and low (3) there was no significant difference in the belief in internal-external locus of control between male and femal pupils. The data were also analyzed by using X2 method; it was found that there were significant relationships between parents education levels and self-reported child rearing practices in the male group, the female group and the total group at .01, .001 and .001 levels, respectively; and there was also a significant relationship between the self-reported child rearing practices and the pupils sex at .001 level.
