Abstract:
This study is aimed at describing the screening process for type 2 diabetes in primary care units of Chaiya district, Surrathani province by comparing the formal screening guidelines with actual performance on site and practice based on academic evidences. Data came from reviewed literatures and related documents, observing and interviewing the practitioners, and the authors past experience.
The results of this study revealed that, in the pre-screening phase, there were a procedure for good performance, written guidelines, and skill development for village health volunteers. However, quality control of the screening process and predetermined preventive indicators were needed. During the screening phase, it was found that people were tested for capillary blood glucose without consideration of
their known risk factors from prior verbal screening results. People did not get information on individual risk for disease prevention. In addition, the record of the screening results was incomplete. In the post-screening phase, people at risk of diabetes were registered. Development of the risk reduction village in the community was set up. There were also guidelines for behavior modification, but
how to details were still missing. Furthermore, the record of risk factors information which needed monitoring was incomplete.
Suggestions from this study are: a quality control system for type 2 diabetes screening in primary care setting should be set up; information about risk factors should be used to benefit diabetes screening and monitoring; clear practical guidelines for behavior modification of people who are at risk of becoming diabetes are needed."
