Effect of massage on craving response in individuals receiving alcohol dependency treatment in rehabilitation stage at Thanyarak Institute
Abstract:
The aim of this cross-over experimental research was to undertake a comparative study of alcohol craving on subjects who have been massaged and those who have not at Thanyarak Institute. Information was obtained from 18 subjects who have been hospitalized on their alcohol dependence in rehabilitation stage at Thanyarak Institute. Data collection was done through a computerized self-evaluation form comprising of Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The subjects have undertaken the said evaluation forms in 3 days including the day with no activities, the day with massage, and the day with leisure of reading newspaper. The day with massage and reading newspaper would be conducted on a random basis with the duration of 30 minutes of massage or reading newspaper for each session as well as a break for 3 days. Each day, the subjects would be stimulated their craving through watching the video of alcohol consumption 3 times with a break and would continue with watching the video of natural view for other 3 times. Then, the evaluation forms for PACS and VAS would be displayed on the computer screen after the subjects have watched both types of videos for them to choose the answers. The subjects would also be measured their vital signs each time they have provided the answers. Once completed, the data of alcohol craving level as well as the vital signs would be analyzed with Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) and pair t-test. The research revealed the result that alcohol craving level of subjects who have been stimulated with alcohol consumption video was low particularly when they have been massaged comparing to the day they have no activities with the statistical significance of 0.01. The result was also similar to reading activity with the statistical significance of 0.01. However, alcohol craving level on the day with no activities undertaken has shown no statistical significance in comparison with the day with reading newspaper (p = 0.4). In addition, effect of massage has reduced the stimulated, anxious, hungry, high, paranoid, tongue-tied and bad of the subjects with statistical significance of 0.01 while watching the stimulated video of alcohol consumption. However, there was no effect on the restless of the subjects. The massage has also lowered the systolic and diastolic blood pressure with statistical significance of 0.01 while watching the stimulated video of alcohol consumption. In conclusion massage affected the level of alcohol craving as well as both positive and negative feelings of the subjects who have been stimulated with alcohol consumption and reduced both systolic as well as diastolic blood pressure.
