Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of oat beta-glucan on weight loss in obese patients. Subjects aged 20-50 and had body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2. All 40 subjects were randomly divided into two groups. A treatment group (n=20) was given oat beta glucan 5 g (beta-glucan 1.1 g.) 2 times per day before breakfast and lunch for 8 weeks. Whereas a control group (n = 20) was given a placebo (collagen) 5 g. All subjects were weighting and checking the percentage of body fat in week 0, 4, and 8, respectively. Results showed that in the 8th week the body weight in a treatment group was reduced to the value of 1.06 ±1.63 kg whereas in control group the body weight was increased as 0.16 ± 1.71 kg with statistically significant difference (p=0.03). The percentage of the body fat in the treatment group was also reduced but not statistically significant difference. In conclusion, the efficacy of oat beta glucan on weight loss in obese patients could help the patients to lose weight in the 8th week with statistically significant difference (p<0.05). However, the percentage of the body fat in both treatment and control group were not statistical significant difference but there was a trend to get a reduction if the duration of this study was extended in some more weeks.
