Abstract:
The objectives of this research are four-fold: (1) to study the behavior of local leaders, reflected by their subordinates; (2) to research on leaders EQ, using self-assessment tools; (3) to study the leadership effectiveness, as evaluated by their subordinates; and (4) to study the EQ and leadership effectiveness.
The research, using a mixed method, finds that 79 local leaders surveyed, are mostly men. Most of them have a bachelor degree; a few have master degrees-with average experience of four years. Age range is 50-59. Most of them are reported to use their high-level of leadership skills in day-to-day administration. Most of these skills can be categorized as transformational leadership, more than the transactional leadership. The EQ assessment reveals high level of all the six aspects. Subsequent hypothesis testing indicates high level of positive relationship between EQ and transformational leadership (at alpha 0.01); whereas the positive relationship between EQ and transactional leadership is only moderate (at alpha 0.01). Most of the subordinates surveyed rate high positive correlation between effectiveness and transformational leadership; such leadership is also correlating with performance, organizational effectiveness and satisfaction
