Abstract:
The purposes of this descriptive research were to study prevalence and associated factors of depression in caregivers of patients with stroke at King Chulalongkorn Memorial hospital. A total of 96 participants in this study. Data were collected by using self-report questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory Thai version, Zarit Burden Interview Thai version, Social Support questionnaire and Barthel Index Thai version. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS. The data were analyzed for percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square and multiple logistic regression analysis. The result were revealed that 44.8 percent of caregivers had depression. Caregivers' factors related to depression at the 0.05 level or less than 0.01 level were inadequate income, less than 5 hours sleep duration, the difficulty in care of the patients, low social support, high caregivers burden and patients factor related to depression was low activities of daily of patients with stroke. The factors that predicted depression in caregivers of patients with stroke were inadequate income (OR=4.20 95%CI=1.31-13.39 ;p<0.01), less than 5 hours sleep duration (OR=5.03 95%CI=1.51-16.80 ;p<0.01) and high caregiver burden (OR=9.05 95%CI=2.68-30.55 ;p<0.001) . These factors were increased risk of depression in stroke caregiver. To decrease caregiver depression, physicians who provide medication should investigated or screen for caregiver of patients with stroke for proper management to improve quality of care among patient with stroke.
