Abstract:
This descriptive study aimed to investigate social support and quality of life in patients with
end stage renal disease receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis in CAPD clinic, department
of medicine, Chaoprayayommaraj Hospital, Suphanburi. One hundred and six patients were included
in this study by purposive. The instruments for data collection composed of demographic data, social
support interview form which developed by Petcharat Butakhiew and SF-36 V2 interview form which
translated in Thai by Methakanjanasak for quality of life assessment. Cronbachs alpha coefficient
were 0.94 and 0.79 for reliability for social support interview form and SF-36 V2 respectively. The
descriptive data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.
The results showed that (1) the samples received the overall social support in moderate level
( X = 140.32, SD = 13.24). Regarding the social support subscale; they were a good level of appraisal
support ( X = 33.75, SD = 3.80), and informational support ( X = 38.03, SD = 4.60) moderate level of
emotional support ( X = 41.73, SD = 7.23) and instrumental support ( X = 26.81, SD = 4.42). (2) the
samples had the overall quality of life in poor level ( X = 2,142.36, SD = 614.43) , Regarding the
quality of life subscale; they were a poor level of general health ( X = 279.72, SD = 101.31) , physical
functioning ( X = 563.68, SD = 292.33) , role limitation due to physical health problems ( X = 189.39
SD = 108.28) and vitality ( X = 237.74, SD = 67.02) moderate level of bodily pain ( X = 145.90, SD =
48.26), social functioning ( X = 154.25, SD = 48.49), mental health ( X = 343.16, SD = 80.44) and role
limitation due to emotional problems ( X = 228.54, SD = 72.49). The result of this study is useful for
nurses competency developing and quality of life development patients with end stage renal disease
receiving CAPD
