Abstract:
Unclear communication is a problem in insurance industry because many of the readers, the insurance buyers, do not understand all that the insurance companies write in the insurance contract. Additionally, the contracts do not attract the readers to read it. The study looks at the writing style as a possible cause of the problem. Although it is believed that generally the style of writing in insurance contracts is formal and difficult to understand, insurance policies in some parts of the world have been rewritten to be more readable. The readability test developed by Rudolf Flesch is chosen to be the major tool of the study to find out how easy and how interesting the insurance contracts in Thailand are. The readability test gives the result by calculating the length of sentences and words and frequency of using personal words and sentences. Because the test examines only certainaspects, the analysis of other writing aspects, such as use of active and passive voice and traditional terms is necessary to increase the understanding of writing style of the insurance contract. The outcome of the analysis can help improve the writing of insurance policies because the study points out the problems causing difficulty in reading and understanding the document.
