Abstract:
Introduction: Currently, psoriasis is a disease which is incurable. Combination methods between 308 nanometer excimer laser and topical medication are brought in to increase efficacy of the psoriasis treatment. However, there is no explicit study regarding the use of topical moisturizer such as mineral oil and coconut oil combine with excimer laser.
Objective: To compare the efficacy of combination treatment between coconut oil and excimer laser with combination of mineral oil and excimer laser with only excimer laser in plaque type psoriasis treatment.
Method of Study: 18 male and female volunteers, which 20-60 years old, were diagnosed as mild severity plaque-type psoriasis with at least 3 psoriatic lesions on the trunk. All lesions were medium thickness or score 2 of modified psoriasis and severity index (mPASI). 3 psoriatic lesions on a volunteer were random to receive each treatment twice a week. Psoriatic lesions were assessed at week 4th, 8th and 10th.
Result: 10 male and 8 female participants were completed a study. All treatment group show significantly decreased of modified psoriasis area and severity index score at week 10th (p<0.001). The group applying mineral oil prior to using excimer laser before treatment shows the best improvement then the group which applying coconut oil prior to using excimer laser before treatment and the group with using only excimer laser respectively. Each of the three groups is statistically significantly different as well as the number of the amount of the treatment which lesions got at least 75 percents better. This also includes the treatment satisfaction. The side effect for the entire study groups is hyperpigmentation.
Conclusion: The application of coconut oil or mineral oil prior to using excimer laser shows better result than use excimer laser alone in plaque- type psoriasis treatment and the mineral oil is more effective than coconut oil when used for skin application prior to using excimer laser.
