Abstract: Thalassemia is the worldwide most prevalent inherited disease causing chronic anemia in human. A retrospective descriptive study was aimed to determine the prevalence of carriers of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies in ethnic groups’ pregnant women and spouses who attended in 1st antenatal clinic during 1st Jan 2552 to 31st Dec 2556 B.E. at Mae Fah Luang Hospital, Mae Fah Luang District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The ethnic groups including 2,731 ethnic groups’ pregnant women and 370 spouses were recruited into the study. The secondary data including sex, age, races, OFT, DCIP, MCV and Hb typing of cases were used and analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results showed the estimated overall prevalence of carriers of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies in ethnic groups’ pregnant women and spouses to be about 33.13%. The estimated prevalence of carriers of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies in ethnic groups’ pregnant women was 37.50% and that in ethnic groups’ spouses was 28.75%. Hemoglobin E trait was predominantly observed in both pregnant women (15.00%) and spouses (12.50%). Shan or Tai-Yai had the highest prevalence of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies (19.38%) while the lowest prevalence was observed among Haw or Chinese Yunnan (1.25%). In was concluded that the prevalences of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies in ethnic groups of Mae Fah Luang District were considerably high and different among ethnic groups. Therefore, it is important to establish the thalassemia screening program in pregnant women and spouses with the aim to prevent and control this disease in Mae Fah Luang District.
