Efficacy of fractional CO2 laser for treatment of vulvovaginal atrophy
Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Fractional CO2 laser for the treatment of VVA.
Material and method: From March 2015 to August 2015, 71 women with vulvovaginal atrophic symptoms, who had attended the gynecology clinic at Thammasat University hospital, were recruited. After signing the inform consent, the general characteristics of the participants were recorded. For 1st to 4th visit, which was 4-week apart, the data of VVA symptoms, vaginal pH and VMI were collected and only in the 1st to 3rd visit that all participants were received treatment by Fractional CO2 laser. Immediately after all treatments, the women were asked to scaling their discomfort during the treatment by using the visual analog pain-score. In the last visit, the data of VVA symptoms, vaginal pH and VMI were collected. Any complications from each 1st to 3rd visit- treatment were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed with a P-value of < 0.05.
Result: The most common VVA symptom was vaginal dryness and irritation. After laser treatment, there were improvements of VVA symptoms. The average of pre-treatment VMI was 34.7% and it was significantly increased after 3 courses of laser (52.3 + 18.5 percent, P< 0.005). For the vaginal pH, the average pH before treatment was 7.1 and it was statistically decreased for 1.6 + 1.3, P<0.005. There were no serious complications and all were satisfied with the treatment.
Conclusion: Fractional CO2 laser could ameliorate the VVA symptoms and improve vaginal health with safety.
