Corpus-based lexical analysis and readability of English language tests for Thai university admissions

Abstract: This study aimed to compile Thai’s English National Examination Corpus (TENEC) to analyze vocabulary and check the readability of the reading passages in English language tests for Thai university admissions. The data included 14 English exams from Ordinary National Examination Test (O-NET), General Aptitude Test 2 (GAT 2), and University Direct Assess Test (U-DAT) during the year 2006 -2012. The programs used in this study for lexical analysis were “WordsSmith Tools Version 6.0” and “VocabProfile Classic”, and “Flesch” formulas were used as tools for lexical and readability analysis. The results of lexical vocabulary analysis in term of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs showed that the noun “people” appeared at the highest rank, while the word “work” was the most frequent verb in the corpus. The adjective which occurred most frequently was “new” while “only” was the most frequent adverb. Regarding vocabulary levels in this study, the results firstly showed that ONET exams were 87.60% of general words, 3.30% of academic vocabulary, and 9.10% of low frequency words including technical and low frequency words. Secondly, GAT 2 exams were 84.30% of general words, 5.13% of academic vocabulary, and 10.56% of low frequency words. Finally, U-DAT covered in GSL with 2.65%, AWL with 5.69%, and low frequency words with 11.66%
