Abstract: Modern Chinese comparative sentences are semantically and syntactically complicated due to their subcategories and labyrinth application. Their usages are found to be difficult to students who study Chinese as a foreign language, especially to many Thai students. These students have made numerous errors regarding their usages of Chinese comparative sentences during communication. Therefore, modern Chinese comparative sentences occupy a significant position in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. They are one of the grammar points to be mastered by foreign students. The data analysis of the present study is mainly based on Thai students’ responses in questionnaires and their replies of a test in my field study. These students are majoring in Chinese at the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce. The findings of this study are as follows: First, among four kinds of Chinese comparative sentences: (1) “bi” sentence, (2) “meiyou” sentence, (3) “bubi” sentence, and (4) “buru” sentence; the percentage of the errors in the usages of “bubi” sentence was the highest, and “buru” sentence was the lowest. Furthermore, a part in Chinese comparative sentences expressing comparison was produced with errors most frequently. Second, “X + bi + Y + Adj.” is in the first acquisition order for Thai students, “X + bi + Y + V. + de duo/ duo le/ yidianr” and “X + bubi + Y + Adj./ V.” are in the last acquisition order. Based upon these two findings, some practical teaching strategies and suggestions are proposed. They are not only beneficial to instructors and learners of Chinese as a foreign language, but also profitable to researchers for further analysis on foreign students’ usages of Chinese comparative sentences.
