Comparison of internet-integrated method and traditional instruction of english language learning : a case study of Samutsongkhram technical college
Abstract:
Abstract:The objectives of this quasi-experimental study were 1) to compare the students achievement of Internet-integrated method and traditional instruction in English language teaching and learning and 2) to examine the attitude towards Internet-integrated method and traditional instruction in English language teaching and learning. The participants consisted of 116 first-year students from Samutsongkhram Technical College who were studying Developing Skills for English Communication Course 1 in the academic year 2012. They were divided into 2 groups : 59 students in experimental group and 57 students in control group. Both groups received traditional teaching method by using follow-up the textbook. However, the experimental group was only allowed to access the Internet to fulfill in the textbook. They were taught by the same teacher with the same topics in their weekly three- hour English lessons over 8 weeks. The students achievement in English and attitude were examined by an achievement test and an attitude test, as a pretest and a posttest. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to explore the differences between the two groups while statistically controlling for pretest (covariate). Mean and standard Deviations were used for analyzing the data. The result indicated that both of the null hypotheses tested in this study were rejected (p < .05). The test score of students in the control group (x=31.77) were slightly higher than students in the experimental group (x=30.07). In terms of their attitude, the students in the experimental group (x=3.73) had more positive attitude towards English language learning than students in the control group (x =2.87). In conclusion, the achievement score of the control group was higher than the experimental group, whereas the students attitude in the experimental group was significantly increasing. This study shows that Internet-integrated method can increase positive attitude towards learning English.
