Abstract:
Cercosporoid fungi are a collective term for asexual morphs of the
ascomycete genus Mycosphaerella. Recently, four true cercosporoid genera
(Cercospora, Pseudocercospora, Passalora, and Zasmidium) have been recognized
based on molecular sequence analysis and a reassessment of morphological data.
These fungal species are one of the most common and destructive plant pathogens
causing severe damage on various host plants such as maize, rice, grasses, vegetables,
forest trees and ornamentals.
In this study, an effort has been made to collect these fungi from northern
Thailand and Laos. Initially, plant leaves with diseased symptoms (i.e., leaf-spots or
other lesions) were collected. Photos of symptoms, including the fungal colonies or
fruit bodies were taken. Macro- and microscopic characters were observed under
stereo- and microscope. The species were then determined based on the key
identification of Crous and Braun (2003).
Our study revealed a list of cercosporoid fungi containing 57 species of the
genus Cercospora, 67 species of Pseudocercospora, 12 species of Passalora, 8
species of Zasmidium, and one species of each cercosporoid in the following genera:
Cladosporium, Periconiella, Pseudocercosporella, Scolecostigmina, and Spiropes. Of
these, 85 cercosporoid species were found in Thailand whereas 113 species were
present in Laos. It should also be noted that 19 new species were discovered from this
work. These include Pseudocercospora christellae, P. cratevae, P. radermachericola,
Cercospora duranticola, C. senecionis-walkeri, Passalora dipterocarpi, Pas. Helic-
teris-viscidae, Pseudocercospora getoniae, P. mannanorensis var. paucifasciculata,
P. micromeli, P. tectonae, P. wenlandiphila, Zasmidium aporosae, Z. dalbergiae, Z.
jasminicola, Z. meynae-laxiflorae, Z. micromeli, Z. suregadae and Z. pavettae.
Detailed descriptions of these cercosporoid fungi were provided and the results
obtained will be published as a comprehensive monograph.
