The relationship between the characteristics of information and uncertainty in illness in post-operative colorectal cancer patients during hospitalization
Abstract:
This descriptive study aims to describe the characteristics of information, uncertainty in illness, and the relationship between the two in post-operative colorectal cancer patients during hospitalization. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 77 colorectal cancer patients from the surgical wards in five hospitals who met the criteria. All the subjects were interviewed at the clinic using 4 questionnaires: the set test, the demographic questionnaire, the interview schedule of the characteristic of information, and the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS/FW. Results indicated that post-operative colorectal cancer patients received actual information for an average of 44.4% of the necessary information. The information that most of the patients did not receive was information about observation for abnormal symptoms and Foley' s catheter retention. The information about barium enema/colonoscope complications was the information that most of the patients received but it was found this did not occur in the real situation. Moreover, the information that most of the patients did not receive, but it occurred in the real situation, was the information about post-operative situations such as Foley's catheter retention, wound, and nasogastric tube retention. The information that the majority of the subjects did not clearly understand was the information about self-care at home. In addition, most of the subjects in this study experienced mild to moderate uncertainty in illness. The result also showed that there is a negative significant relationship between the characteristics of information and uncertainty in illness. These results provide the knowledge base for health care professionals related to problems in providing information for colorectal cancer patients. This knowledge can be used to improve nursing intervention for colorectal cancer patients and help them reduce their feeling of uncertainty and enable them to confront the disease more effectively.
