Abstract:
The objective of this study was to analyze the society and culture of Lanna that appeared in Lanna Proverbs. The information was taken from primary sources and secondary sources. The content was to analyze two main topics 1) Lanna society and 2) Lanna culture. The study results revealed that Lanna society could be devided to 5 catagories which were 1) Geography and resources such as climate, natural vegetation and wildlife 2) Way of life such as family and relative, food, dressing and occupation 3) Beliefs such as belief in charity, merit, demerit, causality, fortune, destiny, heaven and hell, the Lanna people believed it due to faithfulness to Buddhism, including belief in supernatural things such as spirit, deity, demon, devil, auspicious, magic spell, superstitions and taboo 4) Values such as faithfulness to religion, praising feudalism and royalty, authority, respect for the elderly, praising wealth, earning and spending money, appreciation, education and complementing each other and 5) World view such as the world view about human and nature. The culture of Lanna that was founded in proverbs could be devided into 4 catagories which are 1) Moral culture the principle of Lanna lifestyle so as Sappurisadhamma or seven qualities of a good man and Sangahavatthu or four principles of service and social integration 2) Sociability culture Brahmavihara or four divine states of mind and the morale of living with others 3) Legal culture such as law and tradition as well as customary law and 4) Material culture was everything created by man such as religious place, homestead, occupational tools, musical instruments and conveyance."
