The development of web-based instruction by using problem-based learning technique integrated with buzz group leaning technique into the Software Development course of the High Vocational Diploma curricula
Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to: 1) develop a web-based instruction by using a
problem-based learning technique integrated with a buzz group learning technique into the
software development course, High Vocational Diploma curricula, Vocational Education
Commission, 2) validate the efficiency of the courseware developed through the learners
learning achievement, and 3) find out the learners satisfaction towards the package.
The research tools consisted of two units of an online Computer Assisted Instruction
package, a pre-test, post-lesson exercises, and a post-test. The research sampling groups were
composed of 42 High Vocational Diploma students, Chachoengsao Vocational College who
enrolled in the Software Development course in the second semester of the academic year 2008.
The subjects were equally divided into ten groups of four students (n = 40) according to their pretest
scores (i.e., high, middle and low subgroups). The instruction was implemented through
problem-solving, brainstorming solutions to leaning situations, collaborative online learning, and
buzz group leaning within the individual subgroups. The learners then learned through the webbased
courseware that was developed by the researcher, followed by a learning achievement posttest.
The test scores obtained from the pre- and post-tests were compared by using a dependent
samples t-test.
The results of the study revealed that the efficiency of the web-based instruction based on
problem-based learning and buzz group techniques was 82.67/81.24, which was higher than the
set criterion of 80/80. The learners post-test mean score was higher than that of the pre-test at the
statistical significant level of 0.05. The mean scores on the learners satisfaction of the overall
lessons and of the problem-based learning were at a high level (i.e., 4.09 and 4.47 respectively).
This indicates that the courseware developed for this study can be effectively used as core lessons
or supplementary lessons for the Software Development course.
