Abstract:
Purposes: The purpose of this research was to analyzed and evaluated Thai Textbooks, Volumes I-III, for Hill Tribe Pupils, Department of Elementary Education, Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, in content, concept and quality. Procedures: The tools for this research were (1) An Analytical Table of Content of Thai Textbooks for Hill Tribe Pupils, prepared by the researcher, based on a review of the content and concept derived from all the four curricula, namely Curriculum on Pre-Elementary Education of B.E. 2503 (1960), Curriculum on Elementary Education of B.E. 2521 (1978), Curriculum for Hill Tribe Schools of B.E. 2508 (1965) and Curriculum for Training Hill Tribe Teachers Aides of B.E. 2516 (1973). The Table analyzes the content under 26 captions, comprising 190 detailed items on content of the Thai Language, and 48 items on concept of Thai Language. (2) A score Card prepared jointly by all 5 researchers, this table scores the detailed topics under 3 majors headings: Subject-Matter Content 450, Method 300, and Physical and Mechanical Features 250, totaling 1,000 points in all. Analysis of content was on the basis of scoring the frequency of each topic. Analysis of quality of the textbooks was by averaging the points allotted. The research team had discussed the analysis of content, concept and quality of each subject matter. The researcher was directly responsible for collecting the discussive conclusions in order to evaluate the Textbooks upon the content, concept and also Textbook quality. The collected data was presented on descriptive basis. Findings: It can be concluded that Thai Textbooks, Volume I-III, for Hill Tribe Pupils were well constructed and also cover the four curricula in content and concept. The outstanding features of these textbooks were the instructional value on reading and writing and in conclusion of social values in good measure. According to Textbook quality, the average score for each book was good; Subject-Matter Content and Physical and Mechanical Features were excellent; suitable for writing style; clear and in harmony with the content and practical situation illustrations; size of type was suitable for a child's reading in its respective stage and in accordance to the handwriting script prescribed by the Elementary Education Department.
